edp, la mayor empresa de Portugal, celebró el 04 de diciembre de 2006 su treinta aniversario. Con este motivo se nos encarga una instalación temporal en el edificio de su sede principal en Lisboa.
La instalación consiste en 60 molinos de viento flotando delante de la fachada del edificio, creando una nube dinámica, viva y abstracta en su conjunto. Los molinos, de 1,50m de diámetro, tienen acabados reflectantes, metálico en las caras exteriores de los pétalos, y lacado de color rojo en las caras interiores coincidiendo con el color corporativo de la empresa.
El movimiento de los molinos y los destellos y reflejos de los rayos solares que se producen son una visualización de la energía ambiental, una interpretación artística del eslogan sinta a nossa energia de edp. Nuestro proyecto hace referencia a la sostenibilidad, preocupación máxima en la política de la empresa.
A través de los reflejos la instalación entra en un diálogo con la fachada y con el contexto más próximo. La plaza del Marquês de Pombal se ve envuelta en la sutilidad de estos brillos que repiten los giros arrítmicos en torno a sus ejes. La señalización viaria detiene o libera una corriente de automóviles que, con sus reflejos metálicos o luces nocturnas, dibujan la circulación y el movimiento energético y vibrante de la vida urbana.

Bajo una mirada atenta, las distintas velocidades y los movimientos descoordinados nos remiten a un diálogo entre módulos, un fluir de ritmos, arranques, pausas y permanencias. En una mirada más distraída los módulos tienden a la sincronización. Las distintas velocidades se vuelven imperceptibles y son los reflejos los que adquieren protagonismo y llenan de vida al conjunto. Durante el día, las sombras de los módulos dibujadas por la incidencia solar se mueven sobre la fachada contrastando con el brillo y reflejo dinámico de la propia pieza que las origina.
De noche, los molinos se vuelven más neutros y la percepción de la instalación se concentra en la luz y la vitalidad del movimiento. Cada molino, colocado sobre tirantes metálicos verticales a 1,5m de distancia de la fachada, proyecta sobre la pared el reflejo de unas luminarias de bajo consumo colocados en la trasera del módulo y cuya energía es generada por el propio movimiento del molino. El color de la iluminación va alternando periódicamente entre el rojo, blanco, azul y verde.

edp, the biggest energy company in Portugal, celebrated its 30th anniversary the 4th of December of 2006. To celebrate this occasion, we were asked to design a temporary art installation for the façade of their main headquarters in Lisbon located in Marquês de Pombal.

The installation consists of 60 windmills hovering in front of the façade of the building which creates a fluttering cloud of movement; dynamic and abstract at the same time. The windmills, at 1.50m diameter have five petals each, all with shiny reflective finishes: metallic silver on the outside and bright red on the inside.

The mills are fixed using steel cables that run vertically 1.5m away from the façade. The rotation of each windmill powers LED lamps that project light back onto the building. The lamps placed on the rear of each mill have changing colours following a sequence of red, white, blue and green light.  The movement of the mills, and the light and reflections of the sun's rays can be seen as a direct translation of natural energy into visual spectacle.

Through the movement and reflections the installation enters into a dialogue with the façade of the building and the surrounding context. The Marqués de Pombal Square is therefore immersed in a subtle sequence of twinkles and shining rays repeating the same rhythmical circular movement. The traffic lights stop and free a flow of cars, which with their metallic reflections and lights draw the circulation and vibrant movement of urban life.

Under closer observation, the different speeds and uneven movements provoke an interaction between the mills, each with their own rhythms, accelerations and pauses. At first glance the elements can look synchronized, different speeds tend to seem equivalent, then reflections gain importance and give life to the installation.

During daytime the shadows of the elements, drawn by the changing sunrays, move along the façade contrasting with the moving reflections and twinkles of the mills themselves.  At night, the mills loose visual importance whilst the light and dynamism of movement that they create become more apparent.
